First, we would love to start with giving a HUGE thank you to our first speakers, Kemp Burdette (Cape Fear River Watch) and Roger Shew (UNCW). Their insight into the status and impact of the proposed port expansion project on the Cape Fear River was an amazing opportunity to get to hear! Approaching the topic from two different perspectives was particularly helpful and set the stage for many questions from the floor. In addition to learning of the environmental destruction (both ecological and geological) we also learned of the ‘human’ toll (fishing, city revenue, tourism) that will result from the proposed increase in width and depth of Cape Fear river.

With that we are now look forward to inviting everyone to our next Green Drinks evening at Waterline Brewery on Wednesday, August 30th at 6:00pm!

We will be starting at 6:00pm for socializing, first presentation begins at 6:30pm. Our wonderful speakers for this month are Bonnie Monteleone, executive director of Plastic Ocean Project and Dr. Ralph Mead, a professor at UNCW who's focus is on the advancement of research of Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substance (PFAS). Our focus will be Pollutants in our Cape Fear River: The physical and chemical evolution of this problem and ways it can be resolved.
